This Coin Ring is made from a 1959 500 Lire Italian Silver Coin, (1958-2001). It was made with the obverse or head side of the coin on the outside of the ring. It has been antiqued to show off the detail in the coin. This coin was made from 1958 to 2001 and was minted with 83% Silver. The last two pictures show the coin before it was made into a ring.
History of 500 Lire Italian Silver Coin
The 500 Lire Silver Coins were minted during two periods of the Italian Republic. The first minting took place from 1958 to 1967. During this period the 500 lire were minted in silver. The second period was from 1982 until 2001. In this period the 500 Lire Silver Coin were minted in antimonial and bronzital, thus becoming bimetallic. In 2001, the issue was suspended forever because of the introduction of the single European currency, the Euro.
The obverse side of the coin features the bust of a woman in Renaissance dress, representing Italy, surrounded by 19 shields. From the lower left the shields are; Genova, Torino, Aosta, Milano, Trento, Venezia, Trieste, Udine, Bologna, Firenze, Ancona, Perguia, Roma, L'Aquila, Napoli, Bari, Potenza, Catanzaro, Palermo, and Cagliari. The last two are hidden behind the bust.
The reverse side of the coin features Christopher Columbus's ships, The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria sailing to the right. Below the value, with mint mark and name of the author within the sea waves. The ridge of the coin says "Repvbblica Italiana" and the year of the coin.
