What is Jade?
 
Jade is an umbrella term for two different types of decorative rocks used for jewelry or ornaments. Jade is often referred to by either of two different silicate mineral names: nephrite (a silicate of calcium and magnesium in the amphibole group of minerals), or jadeite (a silicate of sodium and aluminum in the pyroxene group of minerals).  Nephrite is typically green, although it may be yellow, white, or black. Jadeite varies from white or near-colorless, through various shades of green (including an emerald green, termed 'imperial'), to lavender, yellow, orange, brown, and black.
 
Jade is found in Canada, China, Mexico, New Zealand, the United States, and many other places around the world.  
 
History and Meaning of Jade
 
For centuries, Jade has been thought to bring good fortune. Cultures, from all over the world, believe that Jade represents a wealth of virtues, including happiness, courage, purity, longevity, and wisdom. The ancient Chinese belief that Jade protected against death and decay led to the creation of Jade burial suits. These sites were composed of thousands of Jade tiles connected by wire to encase the bodies of royal members of a dynasty before being placed in their tombs. In China, it is believed that wearing Jade acts as a protective shield against many kinds of misfortune. Jade, the Chinese advise, should be worn and never tucked away in a box, lest it turn white and die. If your Jade becomes chipped, it is believed to have absorbed an attack in your stead. If your Jade becomes cloudy or dull, it is thought to have absorbed negative energy meant for you.
